To qualify for a study permit, you must meet the eligibility requirements set by the IRCC. You must:
- Have acquired a letter of acceptance from one of the designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada, i.e., a school approved by the territorial or provincial government to accommodate international students.
- Prove to an officer that you plan to leave Canada once your study permit is invalid
- Provide financial proof to show that you’ll be able to:
- Pay your tuition fee
- Support yourself and any family members that accompany you to Canada
- Pay for return tickets for you and your family members once your permit expires
- Obey the law and have no criminal record
- Be in good health and willing to undergo medical examinations
- Be admissible to Canada
- Acquire a Quebec Acceptance Certificate(QAC) if you’re looking to study In Quebec province
If you acquire a study permit, a family member can accompany you to Canada by obtaining a study permit or
work permit.

Check Your Eligibility
Before you start your application, ensure that you meet all the requirements set by the IRCC to qualify for a study permit. This avoids wastage of time and money. If you meet all the qualifying factors, including enrolment into a DLI, then you can start applying for a study permit.

Prepare Your Documents
Certain documents are required when applying for a study permit. These include:
- Proof of acceptance into a designated institution
- Valid travel documents/ Passport
- Financial proof that you can support yourself and any accompanying family members

Fill Out Your Study Permit Forms
Once you have all your documents ready, complete your application forms online or by hand. We recommend completing your application online as it’s more advantageous. The online application saves you time, mailing fee, makes it easier to update your application, and the IRCC receives your application immediately after submitting it.

Pay the Fees
Once you’ve filled out your study permit forms and attached all the essential documents, you can make the required payments to IRCC. The fees include study permit and biometric fees.

Submit Your Application Forms and Documents
After completing your forms and attaching all your documents, including proof of fee payment, submit the study permit application to IRCC. If you fill the application online, you can submit it online. If you fill it by hand, send it via the provided mail on the instruction manual.

Give Additional Information
When IRCC receives your study permit application, they may request for additional information during processing. These include medical examinations, police certificates, and biometrics. Make sure you provide this information within the given time frame.

- Attach all documents, sign where required, and make sure that your application is filled out as instructed
- Make sure you submit your application to the correct address
- Make the necessary payments for your study permit and for work/study permits of the family members accompanying you to Canada
- Make sure you get a letter of acceptance from a DLI and that you meet all the other qualifications to be eligible for a study permit
